Global Manager Freight Solutions & Freight Automated Dispatching System

Dr Anthony MacDonald is responsible for the development and application of software techniques in the design and delivery of integrated rail systems solutions for Hitachi Rail STS both in Australia and internationally.

He has more than 20 years’ experience in the software-intensive systems industry and since joining Hitachi Rail STS in 2006, Anthony and his team have developed and deployed integrated software systems which have enabled significant innovations in rail to be achieved: notably as Solutions Manager for AutoHaul®, Rio Tinto’s world-first autonomous unmanned heavy haul railway system in north-west Western Australia. Further innovations include satellite-based communication remote networks and major enhancements to systems data capture and transfer which are changing the face of train control operations centres worldwide.

Anthony’s detailed knowledge of advanced software techniques and their application for the rail industry derive from his academic background – he holds a PHD in Computer Science from the University of Queensland, where he lectured in Software Engineering from 1998 to 2004 - and a track record of proven success in rail projects in Australia and internationally over many years.
